Humanities Center resumes event series sparking hope

The WVU Humanities Center is hosting the new discussion series, Tell Me More. Designed to provide a welcoming space for conversation, Tell Me More invites constructive dialogue to explore, understand, and address some of the most pressing ideas of our time.

Kicked off last fall, Tell Me More conversations now continue this spring with 4 new events that will focus on hope in the humanities, hope as an agent of change, hope in science, and finally how hope comes to life in music.

Tell Me More: Hope in the Humanities: on Hew Locke's Visual Art

February 5 | 4 p.m. | Downtown Library, Milano Reading Room

Hope is an inclination towards the future. As a disposition, hope necessarily involves critical thinking as well as joy, analysis, and creativity. Join WVU Department of English's Dr. Rose Casey as she talks about "The Procession," a collection of over 100 bright, brilliant sculptures by British-Guyanese sculptor and visual artist Hew Locke. Dr. Casey will describe how "The Procession" addresses climate change in Guyana and colonial legacies in the Caribbean.

Drawing on the work of hope scholars and activists, Dr. Amena Anderson, Assistant Professor of Practice and Assistant Director of the ADVANCE Center, will lead a discussion that explores variations of hope and the utility of critical and practical applications of hope as tools for agents of change.

Tell Me More: Hope and Science

March 10 | 4 p.m. | Downtown Library, Milano Reading Room

Scientists are supposed to focus on the facts, right? Does this focus on the facts rule out hope? Is there a time or place for hope in good science? A panel of WVU scientists will share their ideas about the place of hope in science. Panelists are to be announced.
